The millions of Little Monsters who closely followed Lady Gaga Sunday on social media had reason to be excited.
For starters, Gaga confirmed that her new single will be titled "Applause." She also announced that her upcoming album, ARTPOP, will be available for pre-order on iTunes on August 19, the day that "Applause" will be released.
Initially, Gaga released a promotional image for the single/pre-order announcement. It features Gaga sporting long brown hair and three arms.
Later on Sunday, Gaga unveiled the official artwork for "Applause": she's wearing white paint on her face, with blue around her eyes and smeared red and yellow around her lips. She's also wearing a head wrap as she peers out from behind some white cloth.
The image was debuted on the Women's Wear Daily website before it was posted on Gaga's social media sites. WWD also interviewed Gaga about her single, album and return to music following the hip surgery that forced her to cancel the remainder of her Born This Way Ball tour earlier this year.
Regarding the "Applause" artwork, which was taken from the shoot for the song's music video, Gaga says, “When I look at it I see that there is a longing for the applause. I see that there is a void that is leaking onstage, that the performer is leaking, that the art is sort of becoming something else in front of your eyes. Something more human, something more honest.”
Gaga wouldn't divulge much info about the single itself, other than to say it is "very fun."
As she was recovering from her injury, Gaga says, she had the opportunity to evaluate her new songs. She explains, “I had six months to beef up my brain and my body. I got to put a giant white or black sheet of paint over my whole canvas and I got to review ARTPOP again. I was given the time to really be creative because it’s a gazing process, it really is."
Gaga notes that the hip was more damaged than she had let on. She says she didn't just suffer a tear, she actually broke her hip. She tells WWD, "I had a tear on the inside of my joint and a huge breakage. The surgeon told me that if I had done another show I might have needed a full hip replacement. I would have been out at least a year, maybe longer.”
We'll see how well Gaga can move when she performs "Applause" at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 25.
