As one of the leading nominees at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, it was only a matter of time before Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were announced as performers on the show. That happened Friday morning, during the duo's appearance on ABC's Good Morning America as part of the show's Summer Concert Series.
MTV has also confirmed Bruno Mars as a performer on the August 25 telecast. Other performers include Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Kanye West and Justin Timberlake.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will perform their hit "Same Love" at the awards show. On GMA, Ryan Lewis said of the booking, "It feels crazy. We would've never guessed it. To perform on the VMAs is a privilege so we're very, very excited. It's gonna be a special night." That's no overstatement, considering they're up for six Moonmen.
The duo, who drew GMA's largest crowd this summer to New York's Central Park, also spoke about how their amazing success this year has surprised them. "You know, 12 months ago, we were in the process of finishing the album and had no idea if anybody in America would even like the music we were about to put out," Macklemore said to a screaming crowd in New York City's Central Park.
The duo's album The Heist was a surprise #2 debut last fall, and it's since produced a string of hits, including "Same Love," "Thrift Shop" and "Can't Hold Us." Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will kick off a headlining tour October 22 in Portland, Oregon. It wraps in their hometown of Seattle in December.
"The thing that is important about our live performances is keeping the intimacy," Macklemore said. "And what's important to me is to be able to connect with the fans like it was 20 people."
