Talk about being late for a very important date: Rod Stewart and his wife were left red-faced when they got caught in traffic and stood up Prince Charles at a charity event on Tuesday.
According to the British paper The Telegraph, Stewart and wife Penny Lancaster were supposed to join Prince Charles at the opening of a store in London that's sponsored by his charity, the Prince's Trust. The shop sells jewelry, clothing, shoes and decorative objects designed by young people who've been helped by the charity. But the couple were delayed by London traffic and showed up 10 minutes later, after the prince had already declared the store open.
Apparently, protocol dictates that members of the Royal Family must arrive last at a public engagement, so the Stewarts committed a big faux pas. Rod later told reporters, "I wish I had my own police escort [like Charles]; I would always be on time."
Still, no harm done -- the singer and Prince Charles were soon laughing and joking, with Charles asking Rod how his voice was, and Stewart replying that it was "improving with age." "Like a lot of things," added Penny. Apparently, she committed yet another faux pas by wearing heels to the event that caused her to tower over Prince Charles.
