Nearly a million people have bought a copy of Luke Bryan's latest album, Crash My Party, but you likely won't find the album in Zac Brown's music library. During a recent radio interview with Vancouver's 93.7 JRfm, Zac took Luke to task over his latest single, "That's My Kinda Night."
Zac says, "I know Luke, he’s a friend. ['That's] My Kinda Night’ is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard. And I see it being giant commercially, successful within what is called country music these days, but I also feel like that the people deserve something better than that."
Zac feels modern country music is stuck in a rut because the same handful of writers keep recycling the same ideas over and over. "If I hear one more tailgate in the moonlight, daisy duke song, I wanna throw up," he says. "There’s songs out there on the radio right now that make me be ashamed to be even in the same format as some other artists.”
While Zac admits the Zac Brown Band's music isn't traditional country, he stresses he's so opinionated because he cares about the music and the songs.
Speaking of his band's music, Zac adds, "We play all of our own instruments, we write the best songs that we can, and we put harmony on the songs, we have a real band…a lot of it’s just about subject matter. We really write about real life, songs that come from life and our heart. To me country music has always been the home for a great song."
