Most Backstreet Boys fans know that Nick Carter has struggled with addiction in the past, but now, he's opening up about just how serious that addiction was. While he cleaned up his act in 2008, according to Nick, he did so many drugs that he now has what amounts to brain damage.
Speaking to In Touch Weekly magazine about his new memoir Facing the Music and Living to Talk About It, Nick says, "I could’ve ended up a tragedy. During the height of my problems, I did Ecstasy, cocaine and drank a large bottle of vodka a night."
He adds, "I regret taking Ecstasy. The amount I did caused changes to my brain that are responsible for my bouts of depression now.”
Nick gave the magazine an exclusive first look at the memoir, in which he claims that his brief relationship with Paris Hilton, who he dated from 2003 to 2004, only served to make his addiction problems worse. "Paris was the worst person in the world for me to hook up with,” he writes in the book. "[She] fed my worst impulses as far as partying.”
These days, Nick is engaged to his longtime girlfriend Lauren Kitt, and the Backstreet Boys have a new album and tour. But he says curbing his destructive impulses isn't easy. "It’s hard,” Nick tells the magazine. "But I’m constantly reminding myself that I like this person better than the person I used to be."
