Jay-Z can end his summer on a high note. The rap mogul's massive album, Magna Carta...Holy Grail, has officially reached double platinum status.
"Congratulations to Jay-Z," the Recording Industry of America announced via Facebook on Thursday. "Not satisfied with Platinum alone, Magna Carta…Holy Grail is now DOUBLE-Platinum for selling more than two million copies in the United States."
It took Hov just two months to achieve the feat, but to be fair he did have a head start. Following Jay's unprecedented deal with Samsung, where one million copies of his album were distributed for free to some owners of the company's smart phones, the rapper forced the RIAA to change their rules for awarding gold and platinum certifications, which allowed him to get certified before the project was even released in stores.
Since then, Jay earned his second certification the usual way and he did so with strong first week sales. On July 17, the disc debuted atop the Billboard 200 chart, amassing sales of more than 527,000 copies in its opening week -- becoming the second-biggest sales week for a single album in 2013.
