Leave it to Kelly Clarkson: she decides to release her first-ever Christmas album, and it makes history.
According to Yahoo! Chart Watch, Kelly's holiday collection, Wrapped in Red, is now officially the year's best-selling Christmas collection, narrowly edging out Duck the Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas, from the Duck Dynasty clan. As such, this marks the first time in the Soundscan era -- that's since 1991, when Nielsen Soundscan started tracking digital sales -- that an American female artist has had the year's top Christmas album.
Kelly's album sold 763,000 copies, while the Robertsons' disc managed 745,000 copies.
While there have been other female artists since 1991 who've had the year-s top-selling Christmas album, they've all either been Canadian or British. This is also the second time that an American Idol alumna has had the year's top Christmas album. Clay Aiken's Merry Christmas with Love was #1 in 2004.
By the way, the top-selling holiday song for 2013 was Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You." It's been #1 three times in the past four years; in 2011, Justin Bieber's "Mistletoe" outsold it.
