Sting's New Musical "The Last Ship" to Open on Broadway October 26

PRNewsFoto/Cherrytree/Interscope/ A&M RecordsSting's new musical The Last Ship is now confirmed to be on-course for Broadway.

According to Variety, the production, which was inspired by Sting's childhood growing up in a shipbuilding town in the north of England, will begin previews September 30, and will officially open at the Neil Simon Theater on October 26.  It will have an out-of-town tryout in Chicago from June 10 through July 13.

The plot of The Last Ship concerns a man who, after 14 years, returns to his English hometown to find his childhood sweetheart about to marry another man, and the local shipyard threatened with closure.  Sting released an album called The Last Ship this past fall containing his versions of the songs from the show.  You'll be able to see him perform those songs in concert on a PBS Great Performances special that debuts on February 21.

The Last Ship is directed by Joe Mantello of Wicked fame, and choreographed by Steven Hoggett, who worked on Once.
