Flea Catching Flak for Alleged Air Bass Performance at Super Bowl Halftime Show

Theo Wargo/FilmMagicThe Red Hot Chili Peppers performed their hit “Give It Away” during Sunday’s halftime show at Super Bowl 48, but some people are wondering how bassist Flea could perform live if his bass wasn’t plugged into anything.

“That guitar is plugged into NOTHING,” tweeted Vernon Reid, lead guitarist for Living Colour.

Photos of Flea during the performance show no wire running from his bass to an amp and no cable plugged into a wireless pack.

So far, there's been no official comment on the allegation from the band or Flea, but the bassist did post this cryptic message on his Twitter account within the last 24 hours: "No trickery. No choice, but no trickery."
