Fans Celebrate #MadonnaDay as Queen of Pop Turns 56

Credit: Mert & Marcus/InterscopeHoliday! Celebrate! Today -- Saturday, August 16 -- is Madonna's 56th birthday, and fans everywhere will be saluting the Queen of Pop by marking #MadonnaDay across various social networks.

In honor of Madonna's Art for Freedom initiative, fans have been asked to create photos that illustrate their visions of what the world would be like if we all had the same rights and freedom to be who we are, and add a birthday message for the singer.  Today, fans are invited to post those photos to their favorite social networks, using the hashtags #MadonnaDay and #ArtForFreedom.

Madonna's ArtforFreedom website will host some of the singer's own favorites, and some lucky fans even will be sent Madonna merchandise to thank them for participating.

A message on Madonna's website reads, "Happiness, love, joy, peace, etc... Let's make your picture something that will bring a smile to Madonna's face and make her feel we are all one on her special day!"

As for the Queen herself she may or may not be celebrating her birthday in France, which is where she was last week.  On August 11, she celebrated her son Rocco Ritchie's 14th birthday.  Lourdes, the oldest of Madonna's four children, will be a freshman in college this fall, reportedly attending her mom's alma mater, the University of Michigan.

The singer is also hard at work on a new album, and while we have an idea of who she's working with, and a constant stream of hints on Instagram, nothing's been announced officially.

Meanwhile, Madonna continues to be the gold standard to which female pop stars aspire.  In a new Billboard cover story, 21-year-old pop star Ariana Grande gushes that the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is "strength, she is freedom, she is wisdom beyond anybody’s comprehension."
