You’d have to be living that proverbial cave to have not heard of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge by now. It’s pretty simple: you use social media to challenge someone to dump a bucket of icewater over their head, or donate $100 to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Most folks wind up doing both, then challenge someone else. The latest rock wet-heads for the cause? Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam.
McCready actually issued the initial challenge, daring his bandmates last Friday, as well as Duff McKagan and Dave Matthews Band bassist Stefan Lessard. Vedder was the first to respond, dousing himself Saturday and then challenging Bruce Springsteen and actor pal Tim Robbins. No word yet on any subsequent responses.
The Ice Bucket Challenge has been a tremendous success so far. The ALS Association says donations between July 29 and August 18 are up a whopping 766 percent from the same period last year. That translates into an increase from $1.8 million during those three weeks in 2013, to $15.6 million as of today.
