Gary Cherone's Hurtsmile Hurls "Retrogrenade," Issues New Single "Rock N' Roll Cliche"

Image Courtesy Hired Gun MediaThe rock and roll lifestyle is loaded with cliches -- so many that former Extreme and Van Halen vocalist Gary Cherone thought it was great subject matter for a song.

On October 7, Cherone and his band, Hurtsmile, will release their second full-length album, Retrogrenade, on Cherone's own label, Slipkid Records, and the newly issued first single, "Rock N' Roll Cliche," was inspired by the bands that shaped his own musical worldview, says Cherone.

"'Rock N’ Roll Cliche' can be summed up in the line 'got to give the people what they want,'" Cherone tells ABC News Radio. "It's a nod to the classic rock I grew up on. The opening riff just reminds me of that era and the lyrics hint at some of those influences."

The lyrics, "shake it up, shake for me baby," and "come on and join together with the band," with nods to Led Zeppelin and The Who, make their point against a driving guitar attack.

You can hear the song now streaming on the SoundCloud page of One Management.

Hurtsmile is the collaboration of Cherone with his brother/guitarist Mark Cherone of Flesh and SuperZero, as well as bassist Joe Pessia  and drummer Dana Spellman.

The band will play a special performance at an official record release party October 11 at the MIXX 350 nightclub in Boston, Massachusetts.
