Kid Rock Describes "Classic Feel" of New Album, "First Kiss"

Credit: Clay Patrick McBride"First Kiss," the first single from Kid Rock's forthcoming album of the same name, is a far cry from his breakout single, "Bawitdaba." As Rock's career has progressed, he has moved away from the rap-rock genre that defined his early success.

"I'm always complaining about where rock music has gone, with this new metal feel," Rock tells The New York Times. "You can hear the kick and the snare and everything shaved perfectly. But that classic feel of good blues-based rock and roll -- we dig for inspiration by listening to music, and then we go, 'Let’s write one.' We know how to write songs. I've been doing this long enough."

One thing that hasn't changed, however, is Rock's connection to the military. Last month, Rock went after director Michael Moore and actor Seth Rogen after he heard that they criticized the Oscar-nominated film American Sniper.

"It was something that I could run my mouth on. I’ve been so connected to the military, so I thought it was my place," Rock explains. "Everyone knows, or they should know if they’re going to comment, that these guys don’t create policy. They get their orders, and that’s what they’re supposed to do."

"But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t looking for an excuse to tell Michael Moore to go [expletive] himself," he continues. "When this came up, I was like, "There it is!'"

First Kiss will be released on February 24.
