Joe Jackson Previews Upcoming Album and Tour with Intimate New York City Concert

Credit: Jacob BlickenstaffJoe Jackson previewed his upcoming U.S. tour and his about-to-be-released studio album, Fast Forward, at an intimate show Thursday night at The Cutting Room in New York City.  Jackson played a variety of his best-known songs at the concert, as well as a few lesser-known gems, along with showcasing some selections from Fast Forward.

Jackson began will a short solo set that kicked off with "Different for Girls," from his 1979 sophomore album, On the Radio.  The early part of the show also included a cover of The Beatles' "Girl," prior to which the British singer/songwriter informed the audience that he'll be featuring a couple of songs by other artists at his gigs throughout the tour.

Jackson soon was joined by a three-piece backing band that included his longtime bassist Graham Maby, as well as guitarist Teddy Kumpel and drummer Doug Yowell.  Joe went on to play such classics as "Is She Really Going Out with Him," "You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want)," "Sunday Papers" and "On the Radio," as well as a brooding, atmospheric rendition of his biggest hit, 1982's "Steppin' Out."

The concert also featured seven songs from Fast Forward, including Jackson's unlikely cover of the influential punk-era New York City band Television's "See No Evil."  As previously reported, the album will be released next Friday, October 2, and features four sets of four songs recorded in four cities around the world -- New York City, Amsterdam, Berlin and New Orleans.  Maby played on the tracks that Jackson recorded in New York.
