Joe Perry Says New "Aerosmith Rocks Donington" Video Shows "What the Band's About"

Eagle Rock EntertainmentAerosmith's latest concert video, Aerosmith Rocks Donington 2014, gets its release today, September 4.  The film captures the band playing a headlining set to a massive and enthusiastic audience in June of last year at the U.K.'s annual Download Festival, which takes place at Donington Park in Derby, England.

"I'm excited about it getting out there and having people see it," guitarist Joe Perry tells ABC Radio.  He adds that because the concert was filmed in high-definition, as well as being "lit specifically for video and having the sound mixed equally as well," he considers the flick "a good piece of showing what the band's about."

Perry also says he's pleased that the concert turned out to be a solid performance for Aerosmith, because the band only had plans to film that specific gig, so the pressure was on.

"It's always a roll of the dice when you go in and you're gonna film one show," he maintains.  "[It] was like, 'Let's just put all our eggs in one basket and go for it,' and as it turned out, it came up sevens.  And the fans were there for us, and it was just a really good show."

Aerosmith played the 2014 Donington show while promoting its latest studio album, Music from Another Dimension.  The band's 20-song set included a few selections from the 2012 record, classic hits like "Dream On," "Walk This Way," "Sweet Emotion" and "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)," and some fan-favorite deeper cuts such as "Eat the Rich" and "Mama Kin."

Perry says Aerosmith has played several noteworthy concerts at Donington over the years, and he's happy that one finally was documented for posterity.

"I think we've done four or five gigs there and we've had some amazing things happen," Joe tells ABC Radio recalling that one year, "Jimmy Page came up and played with us…Just some really, really memorable shows.  And this is one of 'em, and I'm glad we got it on tape."

Perry admits that he can't really pick out a specific favorite highlight from the concert, but says he was just glad that "the gig came off with a lot of energy and I didn't break anything."

In addition to the dynamic high-res performance footage, Aerosmith Rocks Donington 2014 also features a fun pre-show segment in which the cameras visit all five band members -- Perry, singer Steven Tyler, guitarist Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer -- in their dressing rooms.  The release comes packaged with an 18-page booklet featuring color photos from the event, and an essay penned by veteran Rolling Stone writer David Wild.

Aerosmith Rocks Donington 2014 is available for purchase as a DVD/two-CD set, a DVD/three-LP vinyl package and a Blu-ray/two-CD release, as well as a digital download.
