Kelly Clarkson Says Recording Soulful New Album Is "Effortless"

Courtesy "The View" Photo BoothKelly Clarkson's children's book, River Rose and the Magical Lullaby, has hit the New York Times Bestsellers List, but her fans are eagerly awaiting the moment when her next album hits the Billboard chart.  The singer's working on a new collection of what she calls "soulful" music, and says she's loving the fact that singing that kind of music is "effortless."

"It’s not as strict and formulaic as pop can be," Kelly says of soul and blues music. "Pop music is actually harder to sing. The more soulful, bluesy stuff is just natural in me, so I don’t have to think about anything."

She adds, "I think it’s just how I naturally sang as a child, like, the things I...kinda learned how to sing on. So it’s just so effortless and I love that."

While Kelly's written many of her songs in the past, she says these days, she doesn't have as much time for that.

"I’ve definitely written a bit [but] I have four kids and that takes priority for me," she tells ABC Radio.  That's why, she says, she's going about things a little differently this time."

"I have actually done something very unique to me," she explains. "I just met with a ton of writers in L.A. and talked them through [what kinds of songs I want them to give me], because a lot of people that are sending songs...they’re not really getting where we’re going."

"It’s a very different process," she adds. "And it’s definitely a growing thing for me to have to sit there in a room with people and be so vulnerable! But it’s good. It’s all good."

No word on when we can expect the new album, or a even a first single.
