More than 40 years after Sweet released its smash hit "Fox on the Run," the song has climbed to #1 on the iTunes' Top 40 U.S. Rock Songs chart. The veteran British pop-rock act can thank the 1975 tune's revival on the new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which premiered Saturday and attracted 81 million views in its first 24 hours.
"Fox on the Run" is featured prominently in the promo for the forthcoming sequel to the hugely successful 2014 sci-fi/comedy flick Guardians of the Galaxy, which focuses on the intergalactic adventures of the heroic Peter "Star-Lord" Quill, the green-skinned assassin Gamora, the musclebound, literal-minded Drax, the furry and sarcastic Rocket Raccoon and the treelike alien Groot.
In response to the song's appearance in the trailer, Sweet posted a message on its official Facebook page that reads, "Sweet conquers the Galaxy once more!" along with a YouTube link to a vintage performance of the tune. "Fox on the Run" reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 back in '75.
The first Guardians of the Galaxy's trailer also featured a 1970s pop-rock gem, Blue Swede's "Hooked on a Feeling," which helped propel the movie's classic-hits soundtrack to the top of the Billboard albums chart.
The Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, which once again is directed by James Gunn and features returning stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and Bradley Cooper, opens May 5. The new film also stars also stars Kurt Russell, Karen Gillan and Michael Rooker.
