Paul Simon to Present George Harrison Award for Excellence at Global Citizen Event

Richard E. Aaron/RedfernsPaul Simon will honor the memory of George Harrison at Global Citizen's The World on Stage Event, to be held at New York University’s Skirball Center September 22.

Simon will share the stage with members of the late Beatles' family to present debut of Harrison's namesake award, The Global Citizen George Harrison Award for excellence in music and advocacy.

“When George rallied the music community to respond to a humanitarian crisis, he set an example that artists of all forms of expression have followed to this day,” George’s wife, Olivia Harrison, told Global Citizen. “By using his individual talent in an attempt to help others, his legacy mirrors the goals and mission of the Global Citizen movement. We are extremely proud to receive this inaugural award in George’s memory.”

Thursday's event will take place two days before the annual Global Citizen festival in Central Park.

Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Jon Batiste of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will curate the evening's musical performances. In addition to music, the event will shine a light on advocates working on issues of girls and women’s equality; education; health; water and sanitation; environment; finance and innovation; and food and hunger.
