Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of Jethro Tull, and founding frontman Ian Anderson has announced plans to hit the road with his current band in celebration of the milestone.

The Jethro Tull by Ian Anderson 50th Anniversary Tour gets underway with a series April dates in the U.K. and Russia before heading to North America the following month. The latter leg features two parts: The first starts May 30 in Phoenix and runs through a July 3 show in Toronto, and the second runs from an August 31 performance in Minneapolis through a September 11 gig in New York City.

The concerts will feature Anderson and company playing selections spanning from Jethro Tull's 1968 debut, This Was, through Ian's 2012 Thick as a Brick 2 -- a sequel to Tull's acclaimed 1972 concept album Thick as a Brick.

"I am not usually a birthday or anniversary kind of guy but, just for once, I won't be a party-pooper either!" Anderson says of the 50th anniversary tour. "I treasure the memories of the earlier years of Jethro Tull repertoire, associated as it is with the adventures of visiting so many countries for the first time to connect with new fans around the world."

He adds, "And this is a celebration of all the 33 band members who graced our ranks -- musicians who brought their talents, skills and styles to bear on the performances live and in the studio."

In addition to Anderson playing with his current band members -- bassist David Goodier, keyboardist John O'Hara, guitarist Florian Opahle and drummer Scott Hammond -- Ian promises that the shows will feature a number of "surprise virtual guests."
