Rock on the Range, Rocklahoma festivals issue statements on Chris Cornell

Credit: Michael LavineThe Rock on the Range and Rocklahoma festivals, both of which Soundgarden was scheduled to headline this month, have issued statements regarding the unexpected death of Chris Cornell.

"We are devastated to hear about the sudden passing of Chris Cornell last night," reads the post from Rock on the Range. "He was a true hero to music, the voice of a generation. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and the entire music community. The voice of an angel, now watching down on us as we celebrate and honor him all weekend long."

"As we mourn Chris Cornell’s sudden passing, additional details surrounding Rock on the Range performances will be shared when they become available," the statement continues. "We appreciate the patience and understanding of the music community during this difficult time and we will have more to share in the near future."

The Rocklahoma statement adds, "We are speechless to hear about the unexpected passing of Chris Cornell last night. He was a true musical legend that will be missed more than words can express. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and the entire rock community."

Rock on the Range will be held May 19-21 in Columbus, Ohio. Rocklahoma takes place May 26-28 in Pryor, Oklahoma. Neither festival has yet announced any official lineup changes.

Cornell, age 52, died Wednesday night following Soundgarden's concert in Detroit. His death has been ruled a suicide.
