Which Dreamcar member is "hard to take your eyes off of?"

ABC/Randy HolmesThe new AFI/No Doubt project Dreamcar will kick off a North American tour tonight in support of their self-titled debut album. While Tom Dumont, Tony Kanal and Adrian Young have been playing together for nearly 30 years in No Doubt, performing with AFI's Davey Havok has been an entirely new experience.

"I've been playing with these guys for a long time, and it's super comforting and fun to be on stage with them again," Dumont tells ABC Radio. "But to be on stage with Davey is so fun to watch him every night. He's the new element and he's hard to take your eyes off of."

Going into recording what became the '80s-tastic Dreamcar, the name of the game for the band members was "fun." They didn't have any expectations, other than that they wanted to try things they'd never done before.

"It was a really, really fun experience for me to be able to write to this music," says Havok. "Because it touches on influences that I've never really expressed before vocally, and haven't written to before, in the exact same way that I've been able to do with Dreamcar."

"That also actually informs a different performance aspect while we're performing live together, for me, that you will see not simply vocally, but physically out of me, as opposed to my many other bands," he adds.

Dreamcar's headlining tour concludes May 27 in Chicago; they'll play the Life Is Beautiful and Austin City Limits festivals this fall. Havok will be on tour with AFI this summer, but No Doubt is currently on "indefinite hiatus."

"[That] has given us the opportunity to do Dreamcar and really commit to this and spend time doing this, and express our creativity in a different way," says Kanal.
