Fall Out Boy has six songs finished for "Mania"

ABC/Fred LeeEarlier this month, Fall Out Boy announced that their upcoming new album Mania, which was originally slated to arrive on September 15, will instead be released January 19, 2018. That's probably for the best, since September 15 is only a month away, and bassist Pete Wentz tells Billboard that the band only has about six songs finished out of a planned total of 10.

"We're a lot further along on it, but we pushed it back," Wentz says.

We already have two previews of Mania in the form of the single "Champion" and the EDM-heavy "Young and Menace." Wentz says that the rest of the album won't be as "sonically a left turn" as those songs, but adds that it's "our job as artists to evolve."

"That's what our band needs...a foot in the future and a foot in the past," says Wentz. "To balance the record."

"What's interesting with Fall Out Boy is we have guitar, drums and bass, but we're finding ways to incorporate other ideas," he adds. "What I liked about The Clash was how they used and twisted those influences."

The Mania delay won't impact Fall Out Boy's fall tour, which will still go on as scheduled. The band will play a one-off hometown show in Chicago on September 16, and the tour will begin in earnest October 20 in Cleveland.
