We may have to wait awhile for that Liam Payne solo album

Austin HargravesIn 2016, Zayn Malik released his first solo album, and Harry Styles and Niall Horan followed suit in 2017, leaving Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson as the only One Direction holdouts. Liam says he'll eventually get around to putting out his own album, but right now, he's enjoying the artistic freedom of releasing a bunch of different songs.

"The album is coming," he tells ABC Radio. "But I've found a lot of new producers and people that I wanna work with. And I don't just wanna put something out because it's, like, the rulebook of 'You should put an album out.'"

In 2017, Liam Payne released three solo singles: "Strip that Down," "Bedroom Floor" and the Zedd collabo "Get Low." So far this year, he's released the 50 Shades Freed soundtrack song "For You," a duet with Rita Ora. Liam says putting out different songs helps him gauge what kind of music he likes best, and what kind his fans like best.

"I think everything's quite changed a little bit now with the industry, so I'm just gonna keep releasing singles, 'cause I think it's important that you know where you stand," he tells ABC Radio. "I wanna know what I wanna do, and I wanna know what people want me to do as well. So I kinda want to [bring] those two points together.

He notes, "Every song so far's been kind of a little tester of...of what we can do, I guess."

The 50 Shades Freed soundtrack arrives February 9.
