Report: Rihanna declined offer to headline Super Bowl halftime show in support of Colin Kaepernick

Getty Images via ABCRihanna was reportedly asked to headline next year's Super Bowl halftime show, but she declined the offer in order to show support for Colin Kaepernick.

“The NFL and CBS really wanted Rihanna to be next year’s performer in Atlanta,” a source tells Us Weekly. “They offered it to her, but she said no because of the kneeling controversy. She doesn’t agree with the NFL’s stance.”

This year, the NFL adopted a new policy requiring players to stand, not kneel in protest, during the national anthem.

Following Rihanna’s refusal, Maroon 5 has reportedly accepted the NFL’s invitation to headline the Super Bowl 53 halftime show on February 3, 2019 in Atlanta.  Their participation has not yet been officially confirmed, however.

Kaepernick is currently suing the NFL, accusing the 32 team owners of colluding to keep him out of the league after he ignited the National Anthem protest in 2016.

Kaepernick previously played quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers for six seasons, from 2011-2016. He played with the 49ers in Super Bowl 47 in 2013, but the team lost to the Baltimore Ravens.

The 30-year-old athlete and activist currently stars in the Nike “Just Do It” 30th anniversary campaign which features LeBron James and Serena Williams.
