Michelle Williams’ fiancé Chad Johnson explains why he saved for 11 years for their engagement ring: “It was an act of faith”

Courtesy of OWNWhen Michelle Williams became engaged to Chad Johnson in April, one year after they met, he had been saving for the engagement ring for 11 years. Johnson had been putting money aside all those years, praying that he would finally meet the woman of his dreams.

“It was an act of faith for me,” Johnson tells ABC Radio. “I was like, you know what? I’m going to open up a ring account, and I’m going to believe every month that my wife is on her way.”

The pastor’s faith was rewarded, and now he’s looking forward to marrying the former Destiny’s Child singer. Williams, 38 and Johnson, 41, are staying true to their Christian faith, and will wait until their wedding day to consummate their marriage.

“It’s really about making sure that the physical piece of our relationship didn’t kinda negate or usurp if you will, other very foundational things,” Johnson says.

Williams returned to Broadway last week as she joined the cast of the Tony Award winning musical, Once on This Island. She believes her role will have a very positive effect on her relationship with Chad.

“My character is the Goddess of Love,” she says. “I’m not perfect, but I try to really see everything through love as much as possible. Maybe this character will strengthen that. So it will be fun, and then prayerfully, if he acts right, we’ll be married, and so we can be married together here in New York.”

You can follow the couple as they prepare for marriage in their reality series, Chad Loves Michelle, which airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.
