John Lennon "Imagine"-themed license plates may soon go on sale in California to aid local food banks

The plates, which will feature a famous self-portrait sketch of the late rock legend along with the phrase "Imagine No Hunger," will go into production by California's Department of Motor Vehicles if 7,500 pre-paid applications are received.

Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono Lennon, has authorized the use of his sketch on the license plates.

"Imagine is a great word to spread around and I was happy to do this because it is helping a very important charity," says Yoko in a statement.

The plates are sponsored by California's Department of Social Services, which, in partner with the California Association of Food Banks, plans to use the funds raised by the program to procure and distribute food to those in need, provide nutrition education, and work toward enacting legislation that would make healthier food options available to citizens.

The California Association of Food Banks estimates that if 10 million people purchase the plates, hunger could be eliminated in the state.

Personalized and standard sequential plates both will be available for varying prices.
