All-star TV event celebrating 50th anniversary of Elvis Presley's 1968 comeback special to air next year

Gary Null/NBCOn December 3, 1968, Elvis Presley starred in a popular NBC special that featured his first live TV performances since 1961, a TV event that came to be known as Elvis' "Comeback Special." In honor of the program's 50th anniversary, NBC has announced plans for a star-studded two-hour tribute event that'll air in 2019.

The 50th Anniversary of the Elvis Comeback Special will feature a variety of contemporary music artists recreating the performances Presley gave on the original show. The event also will offer rare footage of the late King of Rock 'n' Roll, outtakes, and interviews with those involved in the 1968 special, including director Steve Binder.

The '68 comeback special, originally titled Singer Presents…ELVIS, featured Presley performing a variety of his hits plus some classic rock 'n' roll covers, all while dressed in a black leather jacket and pants. The show is widely credited with reigniting Elvis' career and sparking his decision to return to touring.
