Ol’ Dirty Bastard's family threatens legal action against Lil Wayne

ABC/Randy HolmesThe family of Ol’ Dirty Bastard is threatening to sue Lil Wayne over use of the late rapper’s name.

After Weezy’s Young Money Entertainment label filed to trademark the name “New Dirty Bastard” for music production, lawyers for the family sent a cease and desist letter, according to The Blast.

Ol’ Dirty Bastard, born Russell Jones, was a founding member of Wu-Tang Clan. He died of a drug overdose in 2004 at the age of 35.

The letter states that the estate of Russell Jones owns the, “full right, title, and interest in and to the name and likeness” of Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The estate claims that the action by Wayne to register “New Dirty Bastard” is a violation of their trademark and will confuse consumers. The Jones estate plans to launch new ODB projects.

The document says the “Estate will be forced to take appropriate legal action,” if Wayne does not withdraw his application for trademarking “New Dirty Bastard.”
