Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon cover artwork for sale, along with many other famous rock images

PRNewsfoto/San Francisco Art ExchangecPink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album artwork will be the crown jewel of an exhibition of original rock art -- and will be offered for sale -- at the San Francisco Art Exchange, beginning tomorrow.

The prismatic refracted light cover image, with no mention of the band's name or the album title, is considered one of the world's most iconic rock artworks and is expected to fetch millions.  It was designed by Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson, aka Hipgnosis, who ignored Floyd's record company's protests that the packaging should be more conventional.

Of course, the rest is history: The album spent 741 weeks -- 14 years, three months -- on the Billboard charts and has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide.

The image will offered for sale along with dozens of other well-known pieces, including works from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead, Yes, The Doors, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Blind Faith, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Allman Brothers, Lou Reed, Queen, Crosby Stills and Nash, Jethro Tull, and many more.

Should you not have hundreds of thousands of dollars in discretionary income available, prints of many of the works will also be available.  The entire collection can be viewed at SFAE.com, and there's a link there to request a free PDF catalog.

The San Francisco Art Exchange's Art of the Album Cover exhibit opens tomorrow and runs through Halloween.
