Pharrell Williams creates award-winning concept for affordable housing

ABC/Craig SjodinPharrell Williams is helping youth across the country learn through his From One Hand To AnOTHER educational foundation, and now he’s involved in providing housing for the poor.

The 13-time Grammy winner has won an award for his concept for affordable housing from the XPRIZE non-profit foundation.

“Public housing is considered ‘the hood,’ but people living in these places aren’t treated like neighbors. We need something different; we need something better,” Williams says.

“I am the product of the public housing system and access to a safe place to live is a basic human right and an essential element of productivity,” says the 46-year old musician.

The artist/composer/producer led the Charter Communities team, which responded to the challenge “to create transformational public housing alternatives that will provide a self-sustaining life beyond subsidized housing.”

“I’m honored to work alongside the Andrew Nikou Foundation and the brilliant minds at XPRIZE to turn our design into a reality and give those who face affordable housing challenges the opportunity to pursue their goals and live life to its fullest potential,” Williams says.

“We believe this idea will echo and resonate with people across the world,” he adds. "I’m looking forward to the next chapter of this journey with XPRIZE.”

While Williams works to make his affordable housing concept a reality, his Something in the Water festival will return for a second year to Virginia Beach on April 20, 2020 and will expand from three to seven days.

Advanced ticket sales for Virginia residents and returning customers begin October 19. Tickets for the public go on sale November 15. The lineup of artists will be announced November 12.
