Thank u, fans: Ariana Grande's "Thank U, Next" album tops chart, sets streaming record

Republic RecordsFans who've been dying for Ariana Grande's new album ever since she confirmed it was a reality showed up in droves to buy and stream the project, giving the singer her second #1 album in less than six months.

Thank U, Next debuts at #1 on the Billboard album chart, with 360,000 units earned in its first week. That's the biggest week for a pop album in more than a year, the biggest week for an album by a woman in more than a year, and the biggest streaming week ever for a pop album, according to Nielsen Music.

"I love you sm and thank u," Ariana tweeted to her fans.

The last pop album -- and album by a female --  to score more sales in a week was Taylor Swift's Reputation, which debuted at #1 in December of 2017 with 1.24 million units.

As for the streaming record, according to Nielsen Music, 228,000 of the 360,000 units Thank U, Next earned were streaming equivalent units, equal to 307 million on-demand audio streams.  That easily breaks the previous record of just under 127 million streams set by Ed Sheeran's Divide in 2017.

Thank U, Next also sets the record for the biggest streaming week for an album by a woman, set last April by Cardi B's Invasion of Privacy.

Elsewhere on the chart, Lady Gaga's A Star Is Born soundtrack jumps to #2, thanks to Gaga's performance of "Shallow" and the song's two wins at the Grammys on February 10.  And the soundtrack to Bohemian Rhapsody jumps from #11 to #3, thanks to the DVD and blu-ray release of the movie on February 12.

Finally, after winning Album of the Year at the Grammys, Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour re-enters the chart at #9, on a 524% sales boost.
