Big Boi tapped to portray Berry Gordy in new Bobby DeBarge biopic

Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesBig Boi has been cast as the iconic Motown founder Berry Gordy, in the upcoming TV One biopic about Bobby DeBarge, of the hitmaking '80s family group DeBarge.

In addition to Boi, the film's stars include Roshon Fegan as Bobby DeBarge, Tyra Ferrell as Etterlene "Bunny" DeBarge and Adrian Marcel as James DeBarge.

Thursday, the Outkast front man confirmed the news of his involvement via Instagram.

"Just finished playing Berry Gordy in the Debarge movie. Coming Soon," Boi captioned a photo of a director's chair with his name and Gordy's printed on the backrest.

Earlier this week, TV One announced that production for the film is currently underway and is slated for a June 2019 release. The movie is set to explore the tumultuous life of Bobby DeBarge, who was the lead singer of the 70's R&B/funk band Switch before he joined his siblings in DeBarge.

Despite his success in music, the iconic falsetto struggled with substance abuse and found it difficult to cope with the memories of his dysfunctional childhood.  He died in 1995 of AIDS-related complications at the age of 39.
