M83 announces '80s video game-inspired new album, "DSVII"

MuteM83 has announced a new album called DSVII, which will be released September 20.

DSVII stands for "Digital Shades Vol. 2," and is a sequel of sorts to M83's 2007 release, the ambient Digital Shades Vol. 1.

In a statement, frontman Anthony Gonzalez says that the sound of the new record was inspired by the music of '80s video games, such as The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.

"It felt so refreshing to play all of these old school games again," Gonzalez explains. "There is something so naive and touching about them. It's simple and imperfect. And this is exactly what I tried to achieve with Digital Shades Vol. 2."

DSVII is the follow-up to 2016's Junk.

Here's the DSVII track list:

"Hell Riders"
"A Bit of Sweetness"
"Goodbye Captain Lee"
"Meet the Friends"
"A Word of Wisdom"
"Lune De Fiel"
"Jeux D’Enfants"
"A Taste of the Dusk"
"Lunar Son"
"Oh Yes You’re There, Everyday"
"Taifun Glory"
"Temple of Sorrow"
