Danielle Brooks says she was "excited," but "kind of in disbelief" when she found out she was going to be mom

As her critically-acclaimed Netflix drama Orange Is the New Black comes to end later this month, Danielle Brooks is celebrating a new beginning in her life. The young actress will welcome her first child this fall.

Brooks tells ABC Radio that when she first learned of the news, she was happy, but also unsure.

"I was really excited. I was like, wait, 'I guess I do want to be a mom? Mom, I'm gonna be a mommy! Oh my God! I get to be a mother,'" she recalls. "And so, I was really excited -- kind of in disbelief."

Brooks continues, "[But,] there's always this thing with workaholics where you're like, wait, can I still work? How we gon' make this work? But, we will. And, I think everything happens for a reason. I'm about to be 30. I feel ready to be a mom."

Although Brooks didn't divulge too much information on her pregnancy, other than that she's five months along, the actress did share that her family is exhilarated by the though of the new addition.

"They were really excited," Brooks says. "My mom held her breath for about five minutes straight. Like, literally with her hand over her mouth. And my dad was excited and my brother almost cried. He's like, 'We never heard of additions to the family, man. I feel like I'm having my own kid.' So, everybody's really excited for this new baby to come."

Orange Is the New Black, also starring Uzo Aduba, Dascha Polanco and Taylor Schilling, returns for its final season July 26 on Netflix.
