Jack Antonoff, Beck pay tribute to late cult singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston

Gary Miller/FilmMagicJack Antonoff and Beck are paying tribute to the late Daniel Johnston. The beloved cult singer-songwriter died Tuesday night at age 58, his manager Jeff Tartakov tells the Austin Chronicle.

"Daniel Johnston will be missed," Antonoff tweeted. "A brilliant story teller and songwriter who carried my friends and I through many overnight drives in the van. So much to learn from Daniel in the way he shared fearlessly."

Beck simply wrote "RIP Daniel Johnston," and shared a link to his cover of Johnston's song "True Love Will Find You in the End." The recording was included on the 2004 compilation The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered, which also featured covers of Johnston songs by TV on the Radio, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes and The Flaming Lips.

Johnston, who began as a local figure in the Austin, Texas music scene, gained mainstream attention after Kurt Cobain started wearing a t-shirt featuring the cover of Johnston's 1983 cassette Hi, How Are You.

Throughout his life, Johnston battled mental health issues, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. His music and his health were the subject of a 2005 documentary, The Devil and Daniel Johnston.
