Several Areas of California County to Ban Plastic Bags

Photo Courtesy - Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Employees of retail outlets in several parts of Los Angeles County will soon be giving customers the choice of “Paper or paper?”

County supervisors Tuesday approved a measure that bans stores from using single-use plastic bags.  The ordinance applies to unincorporated areas of the county where approximately 1.1 million people live, but does not include cities such as Los Angeles.

The measure, which goes into effect next year, not only bans plastic bags, but also allows stores to charge ten cents for each paper bag.

Supporters of the measure say it’s a small step towards reducing the billions of plastic bags that end up polluting our streets and waterways.  Opponents argued the ordinance would cause a loss of jobs, and the fees imposed for reusable and paper bags would place an unfair burden on poorer residents.
