Boston College Chemistry Lab Explosion Injures One

Comstock/Thinkstock(BOSTON) -- One person was injured in an explosion at a chemistry lab on the campus of Boston College on Saturday morning.

Fire officials say shortly before 11 a.m. crews responded to the Boston College Merkert Chemistry Center following reports about a chemical explosion in a basement lab. According to the Boston Fire Department’s Twitter account, the building was evacuated, and fire crews determined that the incident was confined to the basement.

A female student was reportedly injured in the blast, and by the time fire crews arrived the victim had already left the scene. Authorities were able to locate the student at an off-campus apartment, and she was taken to a local hospital for treatment to cuts and minor burns, officials say. Her injuries are said to be non-life threatening.

It was unclear what caused the explosion.
