California Doctor Sold Drugs at Starbucks

Starbucks(LOS ANGELES) -- A Southern California doctor who wrote prescriptions at coffee shops and restaurants has been sentenced to more than a decade in prison.

Dr. Alvin Ming-Czech Yee was caught on undercover surveillance video meeting with patients at Starbucks, Carl's Jr. and Denny's locations, selling powerful drugs like OxyContin and Xanax, according to ABC News affiliate KABC.

“By the time that the investigation concluded, he was charging $600 for the initial visit, $300 for all subsequent visits,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Ann Wolf. He was seeing about 12 patients a night at that rate.

Yee pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Wolf said Yee’s sentencing “sends a powerful message that doctors who engage in this type of behavior are going to pay a high price.”

The feds began looking in to Yee in 2010.  Prosecutors said a third of his patients were under 25 years old.
