Casey Anthony Deemed Fit to Continue Murder Trial

Orange County Government, Florida(ORLANDO, Fla.) -- Three state psychologists examined Casey Anthony over the weekend and deemed her competent to continue with her first degree murder trial.

"The court will find that the defendant is competent to continue to proceed. Those reports will be filed but pursuant to law those reports will remain under seal," Judge Belvin Perry said.

Casey Anthony, 25, is accused of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, and could face the death penalty if convicted.

The request for the competency review came from Anthony's own lawyer, the judge said.

Monday morning's hearing started late with the judge holding private meetings in his chambers. On Saturday, no witnesses were called by the defense and the jury was abruptly sent back to their hotel after Judge Perry called a recess.

Monday, Perry revealed that on Saturday and Sunday, three psychologists met with Anthony to determine her competency.

Monday morning, Anthony smiled in court and was busy reading materials along with her lawyers.

Anthony and her defense team claim that Caylee accidentally drowned in the family pool on June 16, 2008, 31 days before she was reported missing. The prosecution claims the Florida mother drugged and murdered her daughter.

The first witness called by the defense Monday morning was Orange County Detective Yuri Melich.
