Cops: Deadly Plot Thwarted at Courthouse in Georgia

iStock/Thinkstock(CUMMING, Ga.) -- An armed man was killed by police after authorities say he tried to drive his SUV into a Georgia courthouse Friday morning.

Dennis Marx launched a "full-frontal assault" on the courthouse in Cumming, a town northeast of Atlanta, police said. A deputy acted fast, however, and was able to stop Marx' SUV before it drove into the building.

The officer was wounded in the process, but others retaliated with gunfire and took Marx down. The officer's injuries are not considered life-threatening, authorities said.

“Elements of our SWAT team happened to be close by, on the way to another function,” said Forsyth County Sheriff Duane Piper. The team “pulled up about 30 seconds into this gun fight and they engaged Mr. Marx,” Piper said.

“He came there for the purpose of occupying the courthouse,” Piper said of the suspect.
