Ed Koch Funeral Service Held in New York City

EMMANUEL DUNAND/AFP/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, who died Friday at the age of 88, was remembered with a funeral service Monday at Temple Emanu-El on the city’s Upper East Side.

The service was carefully choreographed by Koch himself, and included a eulogy from current New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

“He was our city's quintessential mayor,” Bloomberg said, “and more than anyone else, Ed knew that New York is more than a place, it is a state of mind. It is an attitude, an attitude that he displayed to the world every day.”

In his eulogy, Bloomberg credited Koch with turning the city around from decades of economic and social decline.

“It is fair to say that the city we know today would not exist without him,” Bloomberg said. “Everything that David Dinkins and Rudy Giuliani and I have accomplished have been built on the foundation that Ed laid.”

Koch, who was a religious Jew, will be buried at the Trinity Church cemetery in Washington Heights. He bought the plot and ordered the tombstone back in 2008.
