Fire Destroys Part of Minor League Ballpark in Michigan

File photo. iStock/Thinkstock(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.) -- A Friday morning fire has destroyed part of the stadium of the Michigan Whitecaps, a class-A minor league baseball team out of Plainview, Mich.

The team, associated with the Detroit Tigers, plays at Fifth Third Ballpark Stadium, in Comstock Park, just north of Grand Rapids.

According to the Detroit Free Press, no injuries have been reported.

The flames erupted at about 11 a.m Friday, and ABC's James Gemmell said black smoke could be seen at least 15 miles away.

Dave Peterson, with the Plainfield Township Fire Department, said the blaze "started in a suite on the river side" and "spread through the attic. The sprinkler system should've held it back, but didn't."

Fire crews said most of the damage is confined to the home plate and first base side.

Whitecaps Managing Partner Denny Baxter called the scene heartbreaking, but he vows to stay optimistic and rebuild.

"I'm absolutely firm in my belief, with the support of those behind me and the support of this community that we'll rebuild it and we'll be just a strong and just as vibrant as we ever have been," Baxter said.
