Four People Shot Dead at Calif. Eviction Hearing

Courtesy: Richard Holloway, Modoc County Record(Alturas, Calif.) -- Four people were killed and two others wounded Thursday afternoon after a woman opened fire and used a knife at an eviction hearing at an American Indian tribal headquarters in Alturas, Calif., police report.

Alturas Police Chief Ken Barnes tells ABC News affiliate KRCR-TV that 44-year-old Sherie Lash, a.k.a. Sherie Rhoades, was attending an eviction meeting at the Cedarville Rancheria tribal office when she opened fire.

Authorities say Lash grabbed a butcher knife from the kitchen after running out of ammunition and attacked another victim.

Police say a witness managed to escape and ran to the Alturas police station for help. Police say when officers arrived at the scene, Lash was spotted running with the knife in her hand, but was quickly subdued and taken into custody.

KRCR reports Lash is a former tribal leader and was facing eviction from the Rancheria.

The deceased have been identified as a 50-year-old man, a 30-year-old man, a 45-year-old woman and a 19-year-old woman.

Alturas is a town of about 2,000 people in the far northeastern corner of California.

Janie Erkiaga is a real estate agent in Alturas and says it's a shocking crime for the quiet, small town: “We don't have things like this around here. This is rural country, God's country and things like this don't happen.”
