Girl, 11, Dies After Falling From Ferris Wheel on Jersey Shore

Hemera Technologies/Thinkstock(WILDWOOD, N.J.) -- An 11-year-old girl died Friday when she fell from a Ferris wheel at Wildwood pier on the New Jersey shore, the Cape May County prosecutor's office said.
The middle-school student fell from the Giant Wheel at Morey's Mariner's Landing Pier about 12:30 p.m. while the wheel was in motion, Capt. Robert Regalbuto of the Wildwood Police Department told the Press of Atlantic City. She fell more than 100 feet and was airlifted to Cape Regional Medical Center.
A spokeswoman for the prosecutor said she was unable to say how the accident occurred. "It's still under investigation," she said.
Morey's Piers said in a statement, "The exact cause of the incident has not been determined, but at this time does not appear to be mechanical in nature."
The girl's name has yet to be released.
The amusement park was busy during its annual Education Extravaganza.
