Hawaii School Shooting: Police Shoot Teen After Alleged Knife Attack

iStock/Thinkstock(HONOLULU) -- What first appeared to be an active shooting situation at a high school in Honolulu early Tuesday morning turned out to be something quite different.

Students at Roosevelt High School in Hawaii’s capital heard gunfire and took cover, locking themselves in classrooms. The school was placed on lockdown. But the gunshot that was heard actually came from an officer who fired his weapon inside a school office, authorities say.

Police were talking to a 17-year-old runaway when, they say, he became combative and lunged at them with a knife, striking two of the officers.

Two shots were fired, police say. The teen was hit, but his injury is said to be non-life-threatening. The officers had minor injuries.

The suspect has been arrested. He was not immediately identified.
