Jessica Heeringa Disappearance: Witness Heard Gunshots

ABC News(NORTON SHORES, Mich.) -- A witness heard gunshots just hours after a Michigan woman was abducted from a gas station, but police cautioned that the blasts heard Saturday morning coincided with the first day of turkey hunting season.

Norton Shores, Mich., Police Chief Daniel Shaw said there is “no information connecting the gunshots” to the case of Jessica Heeringa, 25, a single mother and gas station attendant who vanished late Friday night from the Exxon station where she worked.

“Though we believe the tip is credible, please understand that Saturday was opening day of turkey hunting season and hunting is allowed in the southern portion of our city,” Shaw told reporters.

“We have no information connecting the gunshots to the Jessica Heeringa case, but we have organized an aerial and ground search of the area.”

Earlier Thursday, police released a second surveillance video showing a van that’s believed to be connected to Heeringa’s disappearance.

There appeared to be no signs of struggle at the service station, and Heeringa’s purse and keys were found inside the store. No money had been removed from the register, leading police to believe that the woman knew her abductor.

A witness who was at the station earlier in the evening said she watched a man in a silver minivan flirting with Heeringa.

Cops earlier this week released a composite sketch of the suspect.
