Man Busted for Drug Possession After Cops Find His Lost Phone

iStock/Thinkstock(FRANKFORT, Ky.) -- A Kentucky man who lost his cellphone was probably not happy to see police return it to him, since the phone's wallpaper showed him in front of a large stash of marijuana.

The phone's owner, Tyler Sanderson, 23, was quickly arrested.

"The individual gave consent to search the residence there, and there was 18 pounds of marijuana we were able to seize because of that," Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton told ABC News.

The marijuana is worth approximately $50,000, an amount rarely seen by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Melton said.

School Resource Deputy Montey Chappell discovered a phone wrapped in a paper towel on his cruiser in Frankfort, Ky., last Thursday. The individual who left the phone also left a note that said where they found it.

"So when he went to go turn it on, it had the background picture there. There was this guy with what appeared to be about 20 to 25 pounds of marijuana," Melton said.

Chappell gave the phone to Franklin County Sheriff's Office Deputy Jeff Farmer, who by Friday had tracked down the phone's owner at his home in Frankfort.

"The average guy you might see a quarter-pound, maybe a half-pound, maybe even a pound. You don't see a lot," Melton said. "To see 18 pounds of it, that's a good lick. That's neat."

Sanderson was charged with trafficking marijuana over five pounds and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is currently in custody at the Franklin County Regional Jail under a $10,000 bond. He has yet to be arraigned.

"We've gotten several pounds [of marijuana] on different busts, but nothing where someone left a phone with the picture on it," said Melton.
