Most Americans Still Don't Believe Lee Harvey Oswald Acted Alone

Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Days before the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, a majority of Americans still doubt that alleged assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.

A new Gallup poll found that 61 percent of respondents believe that there was someone else besides Oswald involved in Kennedy's murder on November 22, 1963.

Oswald was gunned down by nightclub owner Jack Ruby on November 24, 1963 so it was never proven conclusively that he was the actual assassin despite the 1964 Warren Commission report that stated the 24-year-old former Marine fired the three shots in Dallas and did so as a lone wolf.

What's interesting about the poll is that the 61 percent figure is the lowest alleging a conspiracy since Gallup asked that question while 30 percent now believe that Oswald was the only person involved in the Kennedy assassination.

As for whom they think might have been behind Kennedy's death other than Oswald, 13 percent say either the Mafia or organized crime. Meanwhile, one percent each blame the Secret Service, big business or Lyndon Johnson, Kennedy's White House successor.

A plurality of 40 percent had no opinion on the matter or were unable to name JFK's alleged assassin.
