NC Ride Operator Charged with Assault Is Set to Appear in Court

iStock/Thinkstock(RALEIGH, N.C.) -- There’s a court appearance scheduled in Raleigh, N.C., Monday for Timothy Dwayne Tutterrow, the man authorities say tampered with a thrill ride at a state fair last week that resulted in five people being injured.

Tutterrow is charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and inflicting serious bodily injury.

Investigators say the Vortex, a pendulum ride that flips passengers upside down as it heads toward the sky, was initially closed because of a safety issue.  Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison says Tutterrow, 46, allegedly tampered with the ride after it had already been repaired and inspected, and “critical safety devices were tampered with and compromised.”

The injuries occurred when the ride started to move as riders were exiting.
