Ohio Prosecutor Goes After Punxsutawney Phil for Lying

Jeff Swensen/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Back in February, the groundhog known as Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring.  Now, Phil's under indictment -- for lying.

Prosecutor Mike Gmoser in Butler County, Ohio, has decided to go after the critter as winter temperatures persist throughout the United States.

"When I came to work in the wind and the cold, I said to myself, something's wrong with Phil.  You know Punxsutawney has some answers that he needs to give and I think I'm just gonna have to indict him," Gmoser says.

The prosecutor says he's seeking the death penalty "because let's face it, Phil is already behind bars with a life sentence.  What else is left?"

Gmoser admits he may face road blocks along the way.

"I know that he's gonna have his supporters.  I'm going to ask the governor of Ohio to extradict Phil.  I know there will be a challenge on that.  But we're going to do our utmost to bring spring in as fast as we can," he says.
